“Surprise and relief” as UK company has waitlist of orders

With its unique, creative, and often one-of-a-kind pieces, Melody Rose has fast tracked itself to becoming one of the most exciting players on the tableware scene today.

Even the threat of a global pandemic can’t dampen the appeal of their collections with the company reporting a waitlist of orders as the UK slowly emerges from lockdown.

Speaking to Tableware International, owner and designer Melanie Roseveare described the company’s online position as both a “surprise and relief”.

Coming into 2020, Melody Rose were supplying both retail and a growing list of HoReCa clients – with new restaurant customers in the USA, as well as growing interest from France and Canada. Then lockdown hit.

Admitting it was “overwhelmingly worrying” when the UK government first introduced restrictive measures, the team were left feeling “motivated and positive” after an upsurge in online orders.

After exhibiting at January’s Maison et Objet, the company had expected an influx of orders from retailers, galleries and the HoReCa sector, stocking up to meet anticipated demand.

“We were faced with shelves filled with stock,” admitted Melanie. “We worried we would need to find buyers to take the stock off our hands when online sales really started to take off.”

Now, Melody Rose has sold out of a number of lines.

The company first noticed an upturn in sales into the second week of lockdown and responded quickly.

“We decided to reduce our international delivery charges, announcing it through our social media channels and newsletter. Additionally, we offered gift wrapping and gift messages as we saw people sending gifts to cheer friends and family or to celebrate occasions that they would normally do together.”

Melanie adds: “Having negotiated good shipping contracts for international deliveries, we were able to offer a safe and quick service with our delivery partners which I’m proud to say was almost 100 per cent perfect.”

She continues: “It’s was truly a great surprise to be inundated with orders. Along with new customers, we also have returning customers building tableware sets and gifting friends and family who have emailed with messages of support! It has been truly heart-warming and has meant so much to keep us motivated and feeling positive.”

Retail orders are now being received for delivery in September, something Melanie calls “exciting and a very positive move in the right direction”, while they await to see what happens in the HoReCa sector. However, she adds: “The promising news is that these orders are not cancelled but on hold.”
