Serax has unveiled Out of Lines, a new tableware collection inspired by the HoReCa industry, created by design collective Uncharted. It was the lack of suitable tableware for their hospitality projects that led creative director Stéphanie Cohen, restaurateur/ entrepreneur Julien Cohen and designer Raphaël Navot to create Uncharted in 2023. Out of Lines, the design collective’s first collection, combines organic shapes with earthy hues such as off-white, deep black and vibrant ochre. Inspired by the ovals found in nature, such as an olive, a lemon or a plum, the collection has over 30 different shapes that blend seamlessly. The collection’s artisanal look and feel are accentuated by the materials they chose, such as stoneware and wood, whereas the high firing temperatures increase the tableware’s durability, even when stacked. The underlying idea behind this diverse collection is an intuitive approach to table setting, combining functionality, tactility and organic beauty.

Each plate, bowl or cup celebrates the beauty of imperfection, with over 30 oval shapes that are reminiscent of olives, lemons and plums. Each shape was purposefully chosen after meticulous comparison and based on the collective’s extensive experience in the hospitality industry. The stoneware shapes have been finished with off-white, black or ochre reactive glazes on the inside and with a sand glaze on the outside, like antique ceramics. The artisanal look and feel with its high firing temperatures means the pieces are not easily damaged when stacked, meeting the hospitality industry’s stringent demands while also ensuring they fit in a standard dishwasher. The underlying idea behind Out of Lines is an intuitive approach to table setting, with functionality and organic beauty going hand in hand.

Uncharted designed wooden presentation boards, which can be used on two sides

Accessories

To complement the stoneware tableware, Uncharted designed wooden presentation boards, which can be used on two sides, and impressive serving dishes on feet, which come in various sizes. In addition to lending ash wood its deep brown, almost black colour and mystic, almost timeless character, the carbonisation process also makes the material food-safe. The wood is finished with a colourless water-based varnish for additional protection. The table accessories also include two organic candle holders in matt-polished aluminium, which recall the pebble shape of the tableware.

Uncharted also created a small glassware collection to complement the tableware, consisting of two unique chalices, two tumblers, carafes, and a glass candle holder

Glassware

Uncharted also created a small glassware collection to complement the tableware, consisting of two unique chalices, two tumblers, carafes, and a glass candle holder. If you look closely, you will notice that the glasses are not perfectly round, which was a deliberate choice after a lot of experimentation to ensure that the glasses sit comfortably in the hand. The glass is first mouth-blown into a mould, after which it is carefully extricated from the mould to avoid visible seams. A stunning complement to the tableware of the Out of Lines collection.
