Opinion: Tableware and coronavirus – Ambiente’s Thomas Kastl on staying real, but optimistic

90 per cent of Ambiente’s 2021 exhibition space is already filled says director of dining who talks to Tableware International about surviving the pandemic

“The global consumer goods industry is facing unprecedented challenges in these extraordinary times – supply chains are interrupted, events are cancelled and temporary shop closures endanger the existence of numerous retailers.

Without a doubt, the coronavirus pandemic makes optimism a challenge. Amid all the worrying news, it is nevertheless inspiring to see how retailers all over the world are displaying fighting spirit: by not going into shock, but by rolling up their sleeves and becoming active in different ways – whether through voucher schemes, online sales or many other ways and means.

In the face of these current challenges, we at Ambiente are looking to the future with optimism. Ambiente was the first leading trade fair to be affected by the beginning impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Yet, those who did travel to Frankfurt benefited from an outstanding order environment. Trade visitors came to Frankfurt in February with a positive mindset, were keen to place orders and gained up-to-date insights into the latest trends and global design concepts.

And we have good news to announce – at 90 per cent, the exhibition spaces of Ambiente 2021 are today already well filled. Moreover, following its successful, launch nearly all exhibitors of the new HoReCa Hall 6.0 have re-registered for Ambiente 2021.
This shows us, once again, that the world’s biggest consumer goods fair is a set date for the entire industry and that Ambiente is confirmed as the most important platform, even in these challenging times.

It is precisely in these difficult times that the trade needs new impulses to boost consumption. In addition, the need for inter-human exchange and personal contacts is increasingly noticeable. In this respect, the corona pandemic, like any other crisis, has its opportunities: we recognise the need for personal contact and the human touch. Networking still works best face to face. Exhibitors and visitors will find all this at Ambiente 2021. Because we all have the same goal – a thriving trade infrastructure which benefits all involved.
So, we at Ambiente are all the more than happy that registrations are pouring in and planning work is already in full swing.”

Ambiente 2021 takes place 19 – 23 February 2021.
