Alessi has revealed a new tableware set by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa. The porcelain collection (which was first presented at Milan design Week) is available in two versions – white or with a blue pattern.
The blue pattern was designed in collaboration with the centenarian artist Samiro Yunoki. Yunoki remained active as an artist for 101 years of his life, but this work was his last – he passed away on 31 January 2024.
The collection’s name – Itsumo – means translates as ‘Every day and usually’. It was chosen by Naoto Fukasawa as the name of the table service as its plain and essential design is rooted in the desire to create a collection suited to different culinary traditions.
Within said simplicity, Fukasawa has introduced a small feature that characterises each element of the table set, imparting a sensorial experience that delights the senses of sight and touch. “It’s called donkaku, Japanese for ‘obtuse angle’. It is a very tiny edge in the middle of the gently curved surface of each item. This is not only visible detail, it is also a strong tactile feature, that you notice once you touch and feel the tableware. That is a very strong but subtle feature,” says the designer.
The tableware is seemingly plain, but conceals a delicate, thoughtful choice of detail. Such measured restraint offers a unique experience.
The two lines, both white and decorated, express Japanese aesthetic values
of sobriety and appreciation of detail, making the tableware attractive to use and suitable for all types of culinary choices, at any time of day. Itsumo forms a welcoming setting for a wide range of convivial occasions. Naturally, the elements of both lines can be coordinated creatively, making for a personalised table service that is mix- and-match.
